What to expect in a Lesson

You learn the Alexander Technique in a series of one-to-one lessons, each lasting 45-50 minutes. Please wear loose-fitting clothes; women may prefer trousers. You may also like to bring a warm top to ensure you’re comfortable when lying down.

I will use gentle, hands-on guidance and explanations. You will carry out everyday movements such as sitting, standing and lying down. Through this you learn to slow down, give yourself time, observe what’s happening and wonder whether that’s helpful. If not, we work on letting it go. Through the learning process you can develop a natural body alignment  which will help overall functioning and well-being. You also learn a transferable skill – so maybe you notice that your hand is in the biscuit tin before you’re eaten 3 of them, and you can decide whether you do want to eat one at all!
The effects of the Alexander Technique can be therapeutic, but nonetheless it is not a therapy and your active participation is required!
The Technique is a skill for life, and how may lessons you take depends on how proficient you want to become, a bit like learning an instrument or another language.
I like you to commit to 10 lessons, as usually at least 10 are required to see a change in your longstanding habits, and generally 20-30 are required to be able to take the Alexander Technique into your daily life. The purpose of committing to a series of lessons is to build a relationship of trust with me and begin to get the hang of the Technique and start to see some lasting results. You need to maintain that commitment long enough to realise and integrate the cumulative results of the teaching.
“All that I am trying to give you is a new experience
